Why powder metallurgy?

When and why is it an advantage to choose powder metallurgy? This is a complex question to answer, but we will attempt to provide some general guidelines.

Powder metallurgy also known as sintering technology is a technology that competes with deep drawing, precision moulding, forging and sheet design – including punching.

When comparing these processes, sintering technology excels in a number of areas in relation to complexity and processes.
Sintering technology allows multiple processes to be combined and completed in just a few steps. Sintering technology thus represents an economically attractive alternative.

Sintering technology is also recognised as a green process with minimal waste – with typically no more than 2-3 % waste in the process.

Sintering technology is ideal for:
  • Workpieces involving several processing steps
  • Complex geometries
  • Integrating multiple subcomponents into one new component
